  3. Agent 1.92 is the official release version of Forte's newsreader
  4. and email client.
  5.  
  6. This version introduces a major upgrade of Free Agent.  Agent and
  7. Free Agent are now available as a single program, and Free Agent has
  8. many of the features that were previously available only in Agent,
  9. such as support for MIME atttachments and non-English character sets.

  23. RUNNING AGENT FOR THE FIRST TIME
  24.  
  25. When you first run Agent, you can choose to use it in one of three
  26. ways:
  27.  
  28. - You can purchase a registration key from Forte to fully enable all
  29. of Agent's features. 
  30.  
  31. - You can try out all of Agent's features for 30 days free.  At the
  32. end of the trial, you can either purchase a registration key, or you
  33. can revert to running the program as Free Agent.
  34.  
  35. - You can run the program as Free Agent, a newsreader-only version
  36. with fewer features.
  37.  
  38. After you have selected how you want to run Agent, the program will
  39. prompt you for the information it needs to operate.  Once you have
  40. supplied the necessary setup information and Agent is operational,
  41. press F1 to display the online help.  You may want to start by
  42. reading the Getting Started topic.  To view this topic, click on the
  43. phrase Getting Started on the Agent Contents page or search help for
  44. "Getting Started."

  47. UPGRADING
  48.  
  49. If you upgrade from a previous version of Free Agent or Agent, the
  50. installation program updates Agent and its components for you.  Agent
  51. should immediately run for you, with all of your previous settings.

  54. WHAT'S NEW IN VERSION 1.92
  55.  
  56. Version 1.92 introduces a major upgrade of Free Agent.  Agent and
  57. Free Agent are now available as a single program, and Free Agent has
  58. many of the features that were previously available only in Agent,
  59. such as support for MIME atttachments and non-English character sets.
  60.  
  61. This release also includes the following improvements and bugs fixes:
  62.  
  63. - We increased the maximum size of the database file for each
  64. newsgroup and folder from 2 gigabytes to 4 gigabytes.
  65.  
  66. - We increased the maximum thread nesting level that Agent can
  67. display from 15 to 127.
  68.  
  69. In previous versions, the maximum level that Agent would display by
  70. default was 6, although users could increase the level to 15.  So, if
  71. you are an existing user who is upgrading to version 1.92, you may
  72. want to increase the maximum level.  You can do that on the General
  73. Preferences dialog box, Message List tab.  On the same dialog box,
  74. you may want to decrease the Follow-Up Indentation value, so that
  75. more follow-ups fit on the screen.

  77. If you are a new user, the default maximum nesting level is 30, and
  78. the default follow-up indentation is 3.  Of course, you can change
  79. these values if you wish.

  81. - Agent can now display message line counts of up to 4 billion lines.
  82. In previous versions, the maximum count Agent could display was
  83. 500,000 lines.  Agent would display "****" for larger counts.
  84.  
  85. In the new version, for counts larger than 9999, the displayed value
  86. is only approximate.  And, so that large counts will fit in the
  87. "Lines" column, Agent uses the suffixes K for 1000 lines, M for 1
  88. million lines, and G for 1 billion lines.

  90. NOTE: The K, M, and G suffixes indicate line counts, not message
  91. sizes in bytes.  To make this fact more obvious, we changed the name
  92. of the message list column header from "Size" to "Lines."
  93.  
  94. - We added a Help | What's New menu option.  This command launches
  95. your web browser to visit FortΘ's web site to find out what's new
  96. with Agent.  Each time you visit the site, it automatically shows you
  97. what's happened since the last time you visited.

  99. Agent also periodically displays a What's New Reminder dialog box, to
  100. remind you to visit our web site.  On the dialog box, you can change
  101. how often you want to be reminded, or disable the reminders
  102. altogether.

  104. - On the launch attachment confirmation dialog box, we made the
  105. default pushbutton No instead of Yes, to make it harder for users to
  106. accidentally launch an attachment that may contain a virus.
  107.  
  108. - When MIME-encoding a message subject, Agent no longer encodes the
  109. initial "Re:" for replies.  We made this change because certain other
  110. programs fail to detect a reply when the "Re:" is encoded.
  111.  
  112. - We added the option to disable automatic detection of yEnc-encoded
  113. attachments, either globally or for selected newsgroups.  This option
  114. is on the Receive Files tab of the Group Properties dialog box.
  115.  
  116. - We improved Agent's parsing of subject lines for multipart binary
  117. posts, so that Agent is better able to detect and join multipart
  118. binaries.
  119.  
  120. - We added an Update Registration Key option to the Help menu.  If
  121. you request a new registration key from FortΘ, you can use this
  122. option to update Agent with the new key.

  124. - Agent can now load its UI resources (menus, dialog boxes,
  125. accelerators, and strings) from a separate resource-only DLL.  This
  126. will make it easier for us to release non-English versions of Agent.

  129. WHAT'S NEW IN VERSION 1.91
  130.  
  131. Version 1.91 adds support for the yEnc method for encoding binary
  132. attachments.
  133.  
  134. This release also includes the following improvements and bug fixes:

  136. - We fixed an incompatibility with newer versions of Windows that
  137. sometimes caused Agent to freeze on startup or when launching a
  138. URL.
  139.  
  140. - We fixed a bug that could, in rare cases, cause the groups/folders
  141. list to become corrupted when you added, deleted, or renamed groups
  142. or folders.
  143.  
  144. - We fixed a bug that caused Agent to truncate extremely long URLs
  145. when launching a web browser.
  146.  
  147. - We rearranged the Help menu to provide more direct access to the
  148. online help Contents, Index, and Find choices.  We also added a Post
  149. Support Question option, so that it's easier to find.  Finally, we
  150. added an option to go directly to our web site for support.

  153. WHAT'S NEW IN VERSION 1.9
  154.  
  155. Version 1.9 adds a Trash Folder feature that stores deleted messages
  156. for easy recovery.  For more information about this feature, see
  157. "How to Use the Trash Folder" in the online help.

  159. This release also includes a number of improvements and bug fixes.
  160.  
  161. - You can now use the Edit | Undo menu option to undo recent message
  162. move, copy, and delete operations.  Agent remembers and can undo the
  163. ten most recent operations.  Also, the Edit | Undo and Redo menu
  164. options now display what operation will be performed.
  165.  
  166. - We improved Agent's handling of unknown attachment types, to better
  167. protect you against viruses.  Now, Agent assumes that most attachment
  168. types are potentially dangerous, and prompts for confirmation before
  169. launching them.  If you wish, you may declare specific types to be
  170. safe, if you don't want Agent to warn you before launching files of
  171. that type.

  173. - Agent now requires that you provide extra confirmation before
  174. deleting a group or folder, to better protect you from deleting
  175. one by mistake.
  176.  
  177. - We improved the dialog box that pops up if you have messages ready
  178. to send when you go offline or close Agent.  It now has various options
  179. for selecting what to do with the messages.
  180.  
  181. - Agent now automatically disables the Windows Indexing Service for
  182. the folder containing Agent's databases.  We added this feature
  183. because under certain circumstances, the indexing service could
  184. corrupt Agent's databases.
  185.  
  186. - In the Address Book and Pick Addresses dialog box, you can now
  187. press ESC to terminate the current incremental search, leaving the
  188. highlight on the current address book item.  This makes it easier to
  189. stop one search and begin a new one.
  190.  
  191. - We updated the ISO 8859-7 charset COD file to include three
  192. characters recently added to the 8859-7 standard.
  193.  
  194. - We fixed a bug that caused Agent to crash during startup when
  195. certain versions of Netscape Navigator were installed on the computer.
  196.  
  197. - We fixed a bug that caused Agent to hang during startup when
  198. running under certain versions of Windows, especially Windows ME.
  199.  
  200. - We fixed a bug that could cause Agent to fail to save a message
  201. being composed if you had saved the message, but Windows or Agent
  202. crashed before you closed Agent.
  203.  
  204. - We fixed a bug that caused Agent to report a "connection closed
  205. unexpectedly by server" error when the server reported an error
  206. immediately before closing the connection.  Now, Agent displays the
  207. actual error reported by the server.

  209. - We fixed a bug that caused Agent to crash when display messages
  210. containing Japanese text with certain invalid escape sequences.
